Dr Melissa Stoneham received the prestigious Margaret Hind Memorial Award on 6 May 2025, in recognition of her extraordinary commitment to the environmental health profession. This award celebrates individuals who exemplify integrity, a tireless work ethic, and a passion for advancing public health through Environmental Health Australia. It is not only a recognition of professional excellence, but also a tribute to the kind of leadership and legacy that inspires future generations.
Mel’s career in environmental health began as a young graduate working as the sole Environmental Health Officer across three rural councils in Queensland. Within just three years, she was presenting at conferences and elected to the Queensland Emergency Hardship Assistance State Council, an early sign of her dedication and leadership.
A true trailblazer, Mel broke barriers as the first female Board member for both the Queensland and National EH Committees. Her academic achievements include a PhD from QUT in 2002, cementing her expertise in environmental and public health.
Throughout her career, Mel has been a mentor, lecturer, researcher, and advocate. She has edited national journals, developed award-winning public health resources, and led transformative work with First Nations communities and international health organisations. Her contributions include more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, pioneering projects to improve food security in remote areas, and vital programs to reduce trachoma.
We are proud to celebrate the achievements of our former Director at the Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA. Congratulations, Mel, this honour is well-earned and a testament to your exceptional impact.
