The Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA (PHAIWA) works closely with its partner organisations and other public health groups to promote public health interests and action in priority areas such as obesity, alcohol, environment & health, injury, child health, Indigenous health and public health expenditure. The PHAIWA is an independent public health voice. The institute aims to promote, support and develop public health advocacy in Western Australia.

Small Grants Available

Indigenous Storybook Launch 

On Wednesday November 16th, the inaugural West Australian Indigenous Storybook was officially launched by The Hon Robyn McSweeny, Minister for Child Protection; Community Services; Seniors and Volunteering; Women’s Interest and Youth.

The launch, which was held at the Men’s Outreach Service in Broome, was a huge success, with over 60 people attending, including many of the Storytellers and organisations involved in bringing the Storybook to life.   All Storytellers were presented with their own Storybook by the Minister.

Local Government Children's Environment & Health Awards announced

PHAIWA would like to congratulate the City of Subiaco for winning the inaugural Children’s Environment & Health Awards held this morning as part of our Local Government Report Card Project.  The City of Subiaco was judged best in the state from a field of 19 council submissions, primarily due to their comprehensive children’s consultation framework outlined in their Child Friendly City Plan.

CURTIN STUDENTS CALL TO “CLEAR THE AIR” IN PUBLIC PLACES

A team of Curtin University Health Promotion students have united with the mission to force the government to tighten legislation to protect children and adults from harm caused by passive smoke, in particular smoking in public doorways. "Clear the Air" are looking for people to sign the petition (see attachment below) and join their campaign. Local Government Planning Guide


New resource for local governments: "Public Health Planning: A guide to developing a local government Public Health Plan"

This year, the WA Government  is expected to pass the Public Health Bill 2011. One of the requirements of this bill is that all local governments will be required to develop a Public Health Plan. In preparation for this, PHAIWA, in partnership with Stoneham and Associates, have developed a free guide to assist local governments to develop a Public Health Plan.

Health Act of WA turns 100 years old

On Tuesday February 16 2011, the Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAIWA) and the Public Health Association (PHAA) of WA held an event to mark the 100th anniversary of the proclomation of the Health Act of 1911. PHAIWA and the PHAA are calling for a new Public Health Act to be passed through parliament this year.
