Indigenous Storybook Launch
On Wednesday November 16th, the inaugural West Australian Indigenous Storybook was officially launched by The Hon Robyn McSweeny, Minister for Child Protection; Community Services; Seniors and Volunteering; Women’s Interest and Youth.
The launch, which was held at the Men’s Outreach Service in Broome, was a huge success, with over 60 people attending, including many of the Storytellers and organisations involved in bringing the Storybook to life. All Storytellers were presented with their own Storybook by the Minister.
Guests were also treated with a tour of Men’s Outreach Service, home to the Lifecycle project which is a story featured in the Storybook and discusses how pre-release prisoners recondition abandoned bicycles and offer them to communities across the Kimberley.
This inaugural Storybook features 14 stories from across the Kimberley and Pilbara, and will be the first in a series of Indigenous Storybooks to be created across WA. The 14 featured stories highlight issues that affect Indigenous communities across the Kimberley such as chronic disease, access to services, housing and health, environmental stewardship, animal management, mental health and alcohol and drugs.
The project will continue to grow with writing workshops and mentoring relationships for storytellers being planned across WA. So stay tuned to the website for more information.
If you would like to write your own story, the storybook framework is available on the PHAIWA website, or our staff would be happy to discuss this with you.
Some of the events of the launch were captured on film and appear below.
