About Us

The Public Health Advocacy Institute of Western Australia (PHAIWA) is funded by Healthway and major West Australian based non-government agencies. PHAIWA works to promote, support and develop public health advocacy in Western Australia. This independent institute focuses primarily on Western Australia, but will extend nationally where it is applicable, whether through government or the non-government sector, to influence national policies and activities so as to reduce harms and bring benefits to the health of Western Australians. The development of public health advocacy targets and action plans through consultation, together with strategies to promote public health are key objectives of the PHAIWA. In addition, the PHAIWA will take on a mentoring role within public health.

The PHAIWA brings both a new organisation and a new impetus into public health in Western Australia. PHAIWA takes a new approach to issues such as obesity, based on advocacy skills and techniques developed on other issues and elsewhere, and a commitment to partnerships and capacity-building.
